WHO IS SAINT LUTGARDE ?
Saint Lutgarde (1182-1246), patron saint of Flanders, dedicated her life to Christ in silence and fasting. She was a mystical saint of Christianity. At the age of 17, she had an apparition of Christ that convinced her to become a nun. She refused a position as abbess in Tongeren Abbey and decided to live the rest of her life in call and humility in Aywiers Abbey.

AYWIERS ABBEY
Aywiers is a former abbey where Cistercian nuns lived for almost 600 years. The religious community of the "Awirs" settled in Couture in 1215 and was dissolved in 1794 after the French Revolution.

The influence of the Aywiers Abbey was very important, especially in the 17th century, the golden age of the community. At that time, Aywiers Abbey had almost 50 nuns and laywomen.

From the very beginning, the abbey followed the monastic rule of Saint Benedict. Therefore, entering an abbey was a strong and deliberate choice. Indeed, the nuns took the vows of poverty, obedience and chastity.

THE REVIVAL

Augustin and Victor are two brothers with a passion for beer and this magical place called Aywiers. In May 2017, they decided to create Lutgarde, the beer of Aywiers Abbey, where for almost 600 years a brewery worked for the trade and personal consumption of the nuns.

At present, there are 5 permanent beers: Lulu Pils, Blanche, Blonde, Fruit and IPA

BAR - CHEZ LUTGARDE
Victor and Augustin opened their bar "Chez LUTGARDE" in 2020, located in the centre of Brussels, a stone's throw from Place St-Catherine.
